Candidates for CA Superintendent for Public Instruction

 ...

Okay, so the election is not even until November, so why do we even care about this non-partisan office? BORING . . . but so necessary to know!

The long-winded name for this public office will directly effect state policies concerning our children's education, by providing education policy and direction to our local school districts.

A few things you should know:
  • first, we don't endorse candidates, so the brief slide show presentation is merely to inform you about them and give you the links to further investigate these candidates for yourself.
  • Second, in this case, as both candidates are Democrats and this is a non-partisan office, their political affiliation can not be a deciding point.

Please share what you learn about the candidates with everyone you can.  We need to have informed voters at the polls in November!

Happy Independence Day!

As we celebrate our country's Independence Day with friends and family, fireworks, picnics and whatever else your traditions may dictate, let's remember that this is the day to celebrate the founding of our country!

A discussion with our loved ones about the Founding Fathers, the Constitution, the history of our flag, our Pledge of Allegiance and Patriotic songs like The Star Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful and Our Country 'Tis of Thee and talking to and about our soldiers are just a few great ways to help highlight the miracle of our country's founding and the sacrifices that others made so that we might enjoy the benefits of freedom.

Happy Fourth!

Finally A Politician We Actually Need

While As A Mom NCSD does not endorse specific political candidates, a certain New Jersey Governor is lighting the way and setting a new standard for those of us looking for alternatives to our current tax and spend politicians here in California.

New Jersey, like California, is facing financial crises.  According to The Pew Research Center, New Jersey is posed for financial disaster with a similar percentage drop in the recent year's revenue, and high (but lower than California) increases in unemployment, foreclosures and a budget gap (http://downloads.pewcenteronthestates.org/Beyond_California_Appendix.pdf).  A study concerning the wealth of the state also revealed that for the four years leading up to 2008, the state lost $70 billion due to wealthy households leaving the state, some say to escape the high taxes (http://www.bc.edu/offices/pubaf/news/New_Jersey_wealth_migration2010_0204.html).  While New Jersey is composed of mainly of Democrats, approximately one-third are independents.  The Obama-factor was in play with the President campaigning for the incumbent Democrat and yet, overwhelmingly, New Jersey voters opted for Republican Chris Christie.

Governor Christie is wasting no time in setting to work to solve New Jersey's financial problems.  He's declared a state of financial emergency and frozen all state spending.  He's cutting state aid to school districts with surpluses, cutting state subsidies to New Jersey transit, and is looking into rich union contracts.  He promises more cuts in the future (http://wcbstv.com/local/governor.christie.freezes.2.1487727.html)

While Christie still has to prove himself on a long four year road, he's off to not-to-be-missed start.  In eight short weeks he's cut 13 billion from New Jersey's state budget deficit (http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2010/04/22/the_thunder_roars_in_trenton_105267.html).  Unlike most politicians, Governor Christie apparently has no sacred cows when it comes to stopping the financial bleeding and making the tough choices. (http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009/11/nj_unions_worry_christie_will.html).  Check out the video below for Christie and his "honest and refreshing" style.

Why even mention all this? I recently got a mailer asking me to join a group protesting the cuts Governor Schwarzenegger has made to our California state beaches and parks, resulting in reducing the number of lifeguards and hours of opening.  As Californians, unless we want our government to continue "solving" our financial problems by increasing taxes followed by increasing spending, then we need to be able to take a long, hard look at our own sacred cows and reevaluate.  Consider this:  California, according to just about every study and report (http://downloads.pewcenteronthestates.org/Beyond_California_Appendix.pdf), is in much worse condition than New Jersey is, with even higher revenue losses, unemployment, foreclosures and an even bigger budget "gap".  While there are lots of important things, right now we need to stand by the principle that nothing is more important than limited government run by responsible people who remember that they are accountable to us and are committed to actually solving our tough financial problems ... not just pretending to.

May Meeting Follow-up

Hello SoCal Mommy Patriots!

Dinner with BACHMANN

First of all, I'd like to invite you to a special fundraiser dinner for Congresswomen Michele Bachmann, on Friday, May 14 at 7pm, in San Diego. She will be the keynote speaker and available to take a group photo with us if we can get ten As A Mom members to host a table. The cost is $75 per person...this is $5 off the regular price. Let me know if you are interested ASAP! So far I have three moms who want to go. This should be a really fun time and a great opportunity to network with other conservative groups. For more info, visit http://caeagleforumconvention.eventbrite.com/.

Meeting News

I also wanted to give you an update from our last meeting. Donna Woodrum from the Eagle Forum and the San Diego Director of Homemakers for America was our guest speaker. She shared with us her passion for our founding fathers vision of America. She also provided some thought provoking ideas on how we as moms can help to take back our country.

Book Club/Movie Night

I wanted to remind some of you that Sherri is hosting a study of "The 5000 Year Leap." We will be meeting the 3rd Friday of every month until we finish the book in August. In September we are hoping to switch to a movie night and pickup where we left off with our book club in October with a new book. If you are interested in participating, please let me know so we can be sure to include you on the evite.

Success Story

Finally, I wanted to share an encouraging story. For a while, I've been wanting to share with the women in my neighborhood Bible study my concern for our country and offer them an opportunity to learn more and get involved. These women are not politically active and I was very nervous about offending them or putting them off; thus I had procrastinated until low and behold, our study for the week was about activism. It was as if God had force the subject. To prepare for this discussion, I had called on several of the women in our As a Mom group to give me guidance and scripture relevant to the study. The short of it is, our entire bible study is now going to read "The 5000 Year Leap" and meet to discuss. We are also going to open the discussion up to the rest of the neighborhood. Talk about a step in the right direction. It is because of you that these women will learn about our Constitution and our Founders intentions for our country.

Thank you for being such a source of support. YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!!

In liberty,

Dana Matas

Let Freedom Ring

 Stop Taxing Us
Tax Day Tea Party

When:  Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 4:30 p.m.

Where:  Oceanside Amphitheater
(near Seagaze Dr and The Strand)

With all the latest news of progressive successes filling our screens, let's not be hateful or discouraged.  Hate saps our energy and discouragement makes us weak.  Instead, come and rally together on Thursday, April 15th as we make the argument for Constitutional, limited government.  We will make our argument and we will win the debate, but only by standing together can we make our voices heard.

Where do we stand?  . . .  We oppose increased taxation meant to fund our governments' irresponsible spending habits and political payoffs, we oppose backdoor politics, we oppose corruption, and most of all, we oppose those who would ignore the Constitution of the United States.

Many today really do not understand the importance of our Constitution.  It is not just an old document created by old men, but a pathway to freedom and liberty that has been our trail guide for more than two hundred years.  It is not an accident that under this document, slaves became free, women became voters and people of all nations chose to adopt a new home in this great nation.  If we choose (or our politicians choose) to ignore it for the sake of social or political trends, we will lose our freedom.  We will lose our liberty.  This is not a small price.  What is freedom when our lives are in danger?  Without freedom there can be no assurance of life itself.  While the current trend seems to be the promise that the government can assure us life if only we allow them to be bigger and have more responsibility over us, this is a false and unattainable promise that leads to a bigger, less restrained and more intrusive government.  As those who have studied history have seen, governments who are unrestrained are of greater danger to their own citizens than any other force:  the Soviet Union, China, Northern Vietnam, Cuba, the Sudan and many more.

Our leaders are already leaping off liberty's path at an astounding rate.  Let's not be fooled into thinking that they do this from a deeper intellect, a more serious study of human nature and natural law, or a more humanitarian heart.  No, they do this because they will gain personally, have no internalized compass of moral understanding, and believe that the government needs to baby us.  Thus, they are easily led away from freedom with cheap gimmicks and promises of ease.

Let us stand together on Thursday, April 15th to tell our "representatives" that WE STAND FOR freedom from big government, we stand for responsible and limited spending, and we stand for THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES as the guiding pathway for freedom and liberty.

2010 Action Plan

Hello Everyone,
Following is a description of the three initiatives As a Mom, North County San Diego, will be focusing on throughout the remainder of this year. The goal of these initiatives is to better organize our members and grow our membership.

1. Pick an Issue (or two)
Most of us feel like every issue is important; and therefore we want to sprinkle our attention here-there-and-everywhere. But by hopping from issue to issue, we dilute the effectiveness of our collective efforts. The last thing we want is to expend a lot of energy without anything to show for it.

As we get closer to the next election, we are going to encourage our members to pick a campaign to support and stick with it. Whether it be helping to elect a public official into office, passing a ballot initiative, or influencing a vote, we will help you decide where your time and talents will achieve the greatest gain.

You may not accomplish everything this year but at least you will have accomplished something. And by focusing your energy in an area where you can achieve some level of success, you will gain the experience, influence, and confidence you need to have a greater impact on each subsequent campaign that comes your way.

2. Campaign Training
Starting immediately, we will be training our members on how to support a campaign. We will not be endorsing any particular campaign, but rather showing you how to be effective in supporting the campaign of your choosing. From fundraising to precinct walking, we will help you learn how to apply your talents and interests to further the causes you find most important. So stay tuned to see what guest speakers we have in store.

3. Political "Study Groups"
Many of us have had friends ask some of the most basic of civics questions. For example, "What does GOP mean?" or "Aren't we a Democracy?" From these questions, it is clear that there is an interest by people to learn more and get involved; but unfortunately these same people are admittedly either too intimidated by their lack of knowledge to act--or worse, they act on misinformation.

Thus, we are going to start hosting "political study groups" for women who are interested in learning more about our current political climate. These study groups will be driven by the knowledge level and interests of the attendees and offer a safe environment for discussing differing points of view and hopefully serve to recruit new members.

If you would like to help organize any of these initiatives, please let us know. Specifically, we will need help in identifying guest speakers as well as facilitating the political study groups.

**Finally, if you haven't done so already, please sign up for our Yahoo Group. Eventually we would like to use the Yahoo Group as our primary means of communication. For sure it is the best way for you to communicate with each other while keeping our email lists secure. To sign up, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/asamomncsd/join.

Best regards,

What is As A Mom and how did it get started?

Glenn Beck invited moms from around the country to discuss their concerns for their children's future based on the direction our country is going (i.e. bailouts, healthcare, education, etc). The consensus among the audience was that moms fear their children will inherit a mountain of debt, less opportunity, and fewer rights as a result of the corruption in Washington. Shortly after the show aired, moms from the studio audience launched As A Mom, A Sisterhood of Mommy Patriots.

Meeting Notes for January 19, 2010

Hello Mommy Patriots!!

Thank you to those who were able to weather the rain storm and make it to our first As A Mom, North County San Diego meeting. We look forward to meeting and getting to know the rest of you real soon. Following are the meeting notes and action items:
